Foiled Cupcakes continues to impress me, so I just felt like taking a moment to give them a shout out. Of all the small businesses I know, FC is a shining example of how to do social media well.
Their social media efforts are run by Mari (like safari). I briefly had the pleasure of meeting Mari a few months back, and I’ve been connecting with her every once in a while on Facebook and Twitter.
Right away you should notice something: I know Mari by name. Sure, she runs the @foiledcupcakes Twitter account, but she’s a real person. And those of us who are fans of Foiled Cupcakes know that. FC’s social accounts are filled with the number one most important activity that most small businesses miss right away: engagement.
Today Foiled Cupcakes did something else that prompted this post: they used their social media influence to raise $500 for the relief effort in Haiti. In 30 minutes.
What does this have to do with cupcakes? Absolutely nothing.
But through this small, impromptu action, FC solidified brand loyalty amongst their followers. And I’m sure that wasn’t even their intention. How am I sure? Because I know them. Better than I know most small businesses.
And that makes me want to buy cupcakes – whether I feel like a cupcake or not.

Thanks for this post, Caleb! Wow – we’re honored!
As a business owner, I’m sure you’re very much the same I am – we love analyzing brand strategies and engagement efforts of companies we admire – because it’s one of the most fascinating dynamics to watch. When these companies come out with something freaking brilliant, don’t you always think to yourself, “Why didn’t *I* think of that?!” We get excited about the things we can do to involve, engage with, and thank those who have really helped us to grow and expand our business. (You and I think a lot alike, I can tell.
)
For us at FC, some days these efforts may be a home run (i.e. $500 to Haiti in 30 minutes, which is ALL thanks to @RickMurray for donating 5 of the 10 dozen cupcakes we gave away today) or a big fat flop; either way, the truth is that we have FUN. I always tell everyone that I have the best job in the world because I get to connect with so many fantastic people throughout this city and across the world, all over a cupcake. I’m a lucky girl!
On a side note, when does someone *not* feel like eating a cupcake?
j/k!
You have no idea how many “Why didn’t I think of that” moments I have. But it’s definitely good to be inspired.
And re: cupcakes, only crazy people.
Thanks for stopping by, Mari. Continue to bring the awesome.
